Tourism in Uruguay: a favorable analysis according to the first two months of the year

  • hace 2 años

“The number of tourists who arrived in January 2023 exceeded by 10% those who arrived in 2019,” said President of the Republic Luis Lacalle Pou, in his accountability speech before the General Assembly on March 2.

During the session, those present happily remarked that this means that tourism has returned as we knew it, or even stronger. This is great news for the sector, which is already reflected in the recovery of the different sectors that comprise it.

However, it is known that there are nuances, as some destinations were better than others and certain sectors worked harder than others. The stars of the coast continue to be, according to the figures, the destinations on the coast, from Canelones to Rocha, although others have been able to position themselves, such as Colonia, for example.

At the same time, there were many departures from the country and Argentina is positioned as the destination to which Uruguayans travel the most. They also mentioned that in the case of Hiperviajes, most of the destinations have already been sold out and that there are still some places available for Brazil.

What are the challenges facing the sector?

Getting off the roller coaster that the sector has been on for the past few years is the main challenge for the business association. “Stability,” repeats Marina Cantera, president of Camtur, depends on the continuity with which both parties have been working.

Cantera has not yet defined what the rates for the sector should be in order for the business to generate the profits it used to have. However, he said that they need to be raised because he recognizes that costs end up impacting its profitability.
