Traveling without knowing where to go: a new modality that begins in Uruguay

The De Toque y Toque venture offers "surprise trips" to discover exotic destinations. The first "surprise trip" from the De Toque y Toque venture begins on October 1st. Those who purchase the packages don't know where they'll be traveling until they check in at the airport. This venture—led by Gustavo Welker, Soraya Castro, and Gastón Freigedo—is in addition to the trips to unconventional destinations the company has been offering since 2013.

Now they're venturing into "surprise trips," which, according to Welker, are unprecedented in Uruguay. Travelers are given tips on what type of clothing to pack in their backpacks, depending on the climate of the destination. "These will be unforgettable trips for those who participate; we've put a lot of effort into this idea to make it highly enjoyable," the entrepreneur emphasized.

The planned travel time for these "unknown" proposals is 29 days. The organizers have designed a "travel kit" that includes everything they need.

Getting rid of comfort

Every year, De Toque y Toque plans trips for groups of up to 30 people, selecting exotic destinations whose cultures invite intrepid and curious exploration. In Gustavo Welker's words, it's essential that travelers be willing to shed their comfort zones for a few days: "The idea is to form groups of people who want to experience the trip 'from the inside'; who are eager to walk, ride local trains, and see life from a different perspective," he explained.

Within this framework, some of the destinations visited are India, Thailand, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Turkey, South Africa, Indonesia, Singapore, and Peru. The company has the support of the Gondrand travel agency as a responsible operator, and with the advice of Juan Manuel Luque (one of the original precursors of the idea).

Academy and adventure

Continuing with the trend of exploring innovative ideas, the "college trips" are designed for groups of students who share the same tourism philosophy as De Toque y Toque: an interest in exoticism, adventure, and diverse cultures. The available financing options are another attraction.

Right now, a group of economics students is touring South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Tanzania. "It's impressive how people get involved in the trip, seeking to be more than just tourists," Welker said.

The next planned university trip will be with students from the Udelar Faculty of Medicine, and departure is scheduled for March 2016. The trip will cover Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.
